Step into the final chapter of British India with the 1947 1 Rupee coin — the legendary "Tiger Rupee," the last 1 Rupee struck under colonial rule and a powerful symbol of an empire on the threshold of dissolution.
Struck in nickel and measuring 28 mm in diameter, the coin carries the dignified portrait of King George VI on the obverse, designed by acclaimed sculptor Percy Metcalfe with the inscription "GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR." The reverse, designed by Patrick Brindley, departs dramatically from the traditional floral wreath of earlier British India coinage — instead featuring a magnificent Indian tiger in mid-stride, accompanied by the denomination written in three scripts: Devanagari (एक रूपया), Latin (ONE RUPEE), and Urdu (یک روپیہ). The trilingual inscription mirrored the linguistic plurality of a subcontinent on the eve of its political transformation.
Issued at the cusp of empire, the 1947 Rupee captured a symbolic shift from imperial iconography to indigenous identity — the tiger, a long-standing emblem of Indian sovereignty, quietly replacing the colonial wreath. Within months of this coin's release, the British Raj would dissolve and India would emerge as a free nation.
Set into a polished metal strap, the 1947 Tiger Rupee becomes the centrepiece of an Anka luxury timepiece. The brushed sheen of the metal pairs naturally with the silvery nickel of the coin, giving this independence-era artifact a contemporary, sculptural presence on the wrist.

USP : The legendary 1947 Tiger Rupee — the last coin of British India — preserved as a wearable witness to the dawn of independence.
