Step into the final chapter of British India with the 1947 1 Rupee, the legendary "Tiger Rupee," the last 1 Rupee struck under colonial rule.
Struck in nickel and measuring 28 mm in diameter, the coin carries the dignified portrait of King George VI on the obverse, designed by sculptor Percy Metcalfe with the inscription "GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR." The reverse, by Patrick Brindley, breaks from the traditional wreath to feature a magnificent Indian tiger in mid-stride, with the denomination in Devanagari, Latin, and Urdu.
Issued at the cusp of empire, the Tiger Rupee captured a symbolic shift from imperial iconography to indigenous identity, the tiger quietly replacing the colonial wreath just months before the Raj dissolved and India emerged free.
Set into hand-carved oak wood, the 1947 Tiger Rupee becomes the centrepiece of a luxurious Anka timepiece, the wood's natural grain complementing its aged surface in a refined, wearable record of history.
